Santa Cruz Family Photo Session Tips

  1. Plan your outfits a few days before or the night before your session. Text your girl and I will help you plan and coordinate the best colors and options. Have clothes ironed or steamed and ready to just slip on the day of your photo session! Your family will pick up on your energy and you will exude confident and calm energy for all to absorb! If you can get your kiddos involved in picking and finalizing their outfits, great! This gives them autonomy and the feeling that they have a say in what will be happening. If you are like me and are the master of the shit show! I say forget it all and opt-out for fewer clothes and bare feet! Seriously, naked babies and shirtless humans are my favorite… Get your mind out of the gutter! I am talking about the kids!

  2. Have a conversation with your family about how the photo session will run. Explain to them they don’t have to force a smile or pose in any way they don’t want to. For me, I let children run the show (with guided control and tips) and follow their lead. I have tricks up my sleeve that will make them smile naturally, but if they are doing EXACTLY what THEY WANT to do, the photos will be authentic and natural and stress-free. Don’t force a smile because in the end its all about your connections and the experience of being TOGETHER!

  3. Plan on having a family excursion or simply an evening or morning out together. Do things you normally do. Bring a ball, musical instruments, fake cameras, and bubbles, frolic in the ocean, read books. Don’t think about the photographer following around and focus on your love! Family Photos should never be boring!

  4. I might get some haters for this, but bribery goes a long way! For husbands and children alike! Yes, pack or grab their favorite beer, candy or treat! It can turn any frown upside down!

  5. And the most important one is to let all expectations go because your family dynamics, natural smiles and love will shine on because you are together! Show up as YOU ARE and leave the magic and rest to your truly, your wonderful Santa Cruz Photographer! Be yourself and just HAVE FUN!
